AutoZone’s existing image modal was limited: it displayed only a large customer-uploaded image and required users to add a caption, even though they had already written a review. Reviews were also managed through a third-party program, limiting design flexibility. The modal lacked context, making it hard for users to connect images with the corresponding review.
Design a new image modal for all device types that displays the customer’s review details alongside their images. Key elements included:
Star rating
Review title
Review text
Date of submission
Recommended or not
The new modal allows users to see images in context with the full review, improving comprehension and engagement. The design is fully responsive, visually cohesive, and provides a better user experience across all devices
The Research
I conducted a competitive analysis of review modals and “see all images” modals across major retail sites. I identified both pain points and “wow factors” in their designs. Sites were grouped based on whether their behavior aligned with user expectations or introduced unexpected interactions. I then created a mind map exploring functional and visual improvements, as well as new features we could implement to enhance the experience.
The UI
Created low-fidelity layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop breakpoints.
Documented logic and interactions for every button in the modal, ensuring clarity for the development team.
Developed high-fidelity compositions for development handoff.
